Sometime back I came across this definition in one of the flickr groups – somehow the page is a deadlink but here is what one had to say in a flickr group on creativity and Photography
Creativity is the act of filtering, remixing, and drawing connections
between all these ideas that swirl all around us.
My Friend, Jono, who is doing his PhD in Berkeley (we worked in the same research group i.e BEST) is very interested in creativity and its role or application in engineering (his Phd area). In fact, I really cherish some of the conversations we have had on lots of different this over the past year and a half (apart from creativity and studies :-o). He constantly writes on creativity – his recent articles ‘ Creativity and “love it, hate it” ‘ and ‘Measuring Creativity‘ are a great read. You can digg more on his blog for more articles if this interests you. You can also check out my del.icio.us feed on creativity on the articles I read.
Coming back to the title, ‘Creativity’ is a very vague term in fact as abstract as the process of ‘Being creative’ (I am comparing apples and oranges) itself. None of them is really able to quantify it and Creativity means different things at different times at different places. Jono’s reply to the mail I sent him with this quote was :
certainly a very poetic definition. not too practical but quite evocative.first off people don’t like to define creativity – it’s a very tough
thing to do – which is also, incidentally, why it’s hard to measure.
i talked a little about definitions for creative things today. but not
really about definitions for creativity itself. most of the
discussions are about whether or not something is creative rather than
what it is itself.
some quotes like this are interesting:
The function of the imagination is not to make strange things settled,
so much as to make settled things strange.
actually there’s a little too much stuff for me to write in a mail.
let’s talk about this stuff over a beer sometime.
Anyway, this posts’ main theme was to get you thinking and make you get a flair of it! Because next time you think of sexy designs like the iPod, BMW, Rolex watch or the kick ass cell phone in your hand – There is definitely more in it than what the brain can think of at that single moment!!?
